About This Tour
The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Located on the small island of Pharos near the entrance of Alexandria’s harbor, it was constructed in the 3rd century BCE during the reign of Ptolemy II.
Although the original structure was destroyed by earthquakes, it remains a symbol of ancient engineering brilliance and maritime history. The lighthouse guided sailors safely into the busy port of Alexandria, using a combination of fire and reflective surfaces at its top.
Today, the site is marked by historical remains and a museum that highlights the lighthouse’s significance in antiquity. It represents not only the city’s rich cultural and scientific heritage but also Alexandria’s role as a major center of trade and knowledge in the ancient world.
